The Bloody Basics: Day 2 - Discover Your Monthly Super Powers
The #BloodyBasics is a 5 part blog series introducing you to the wonders o’ menstruation. Yep, over the next five days I’ll be sharing EVERYTHING you need to know about riding your crimson wave – how to chart your cycle and discover your monthly super powers, natural ways to deal with endometriosis + PCOS, nutrition for PMS, how the pill is making you bat-shit cray-cray, amazing period apps that will help you know yourself better – SO. BLOODY. GOOD.
Why should you chart your cycle? Charting your cycle is not just for the want-to-be pregnacious. Your cycle is the key to unlocking what’s good and what’s not so good in your life. So if you’re suffering from gnarly PMT pains and red-with-rage anger, it’s your body’s signal that usually you’re not paying attention to your body or your needs in the other phases of your cycle – maybe you’re working too hard, pulling too many all nighters at work or maybe you’re trying to be super woman and not taking time out for yourself – when you start charting your moods and actions for a few months, you’ll begin to see patterns emerge, tendencies will make themselves known and you’ll really get to know your cyclic nature. You’ll see what days you want to curl up in a ball and hide under the duvet, what days you rock out at getting shit done and what days you are so full of energy you could work for 14 hours straight and still be nice to your family members. (I am yet to discover this day as the Viking will testify.)
I've created a Cycle Repair Kit to help you understand your cyclic nature, what the super powers of each phase are and how they show up for you personally each cycle and that's available as a free download with Explore Your Lady Landscape. But if you prefer something a li'l more techno-led, on Thursday I'll introduce you to my favourite free period charting app for your phone and share an interview with it's creatrix (she's AWESOME) , but 'til then, if you're wanting to get started right away, simply mark the first day of your bleed in a diary/calendar as Day 1 and that's all you really need to get started.
Start making a note of your emotions + how you're feeling that particular day, it can be as basic or as in-depth as you'd like, because each phase of your cycle has it's own super-powers, and when you work with your cycle in detail, you’ll be able to start starring the days when you’re really rocking out, days when you are teary and days when you want to gouge people’s eyes out with a spoon. (PLEASE tell me that isn't just me?!) One of my most favourite realisations-through-charting was from a client who noticed that on day 27 of her cycle, a few days before her bleed, her husband ‘drank water like he was chewing carrots.’ Best. Quote. Ever. You'll start to see when your family really annoy you, when your lover is so irresistible you text them at work saying; ‘get home now, I want you’ and when you actually want to do housework (I hate housework, but there is one day, each cycle, day 21 for me, when I actually just want everything to be put away and clean, it's why I have a cleaner, our house would be VERY messy if I waited til the 21st day of each cycle!) When you can start to see what comes up for you each day, over a series of months, you’ll see patterns begin to emerge, patterns that will become your personal hot spots and super powers. As you become more aware of each phase of the cycle and how you personally experience each one of them, you will find it much easier to recognise and use the super powers and work with the hot spots of that phase. You will also experience a far greater acceptance of your body, your menstrual cycle and your complete feminine nature, because your menstrual cycle is way more than just a biological process; it’s a cycle of ever-changing spiritual, emotional, creative energy, a road map that leads right back to the very essence of you. EVERY MONTH.
When you chart, you’ll start to see that you experience life through the lens of the current phase that you’re in, how you observe the world changes from week to week, so at each phase of our menstrual cycle, we show up to life differently. How I answer a question during ovulation will be very different to how I answer a question at menstruation. Can you see how knowing this information could actually start to really help you plan dates, plan business meetings, plan your entire life? And more importantly than all that, it will help you to realize that you’re not crazy, and that you’re not consistent, you’re a woman, you’re cyclic and that is NOT a bad thing. In fact, just so you know, it’s a really bloody amazing thing. Being consistent is a masculine construct and does not serve us as women, when we try to work, create + love from this place, we end up exhausted and depleted because it’s not sustainable for the feminine.
The magic of the menstrual cycle means that every month, you have the opportunity to nurture and honour yourself, to renew and restore your energies, not just physically from the shedding and renewing of your eggs and womb lining, but your confidence, your dreams, your sexuality are all renewed during menstruation ready to be used again in pre-ovulation – how freaking awesome is that? And the good news is that you will find that you can do and accomplish more without feeling useless, exhausted or frustrated. In fact, you will maximize your impact, your influence and more importantly, your pleasure in the process. Hurr-freakin-rahhh!
Do you chart your cycle? Do you know what day you're due to bleed or is it always a surprise each month? If you have any questions, comments or thoughts – I LOVE it when you share – or if there’s anything you’d like me to cover over the next five days, leave a comment below or over at theSassyology FB page. Don’t hold back, I want to know what’s going on with you and your relationship with your vagina, your ovaries, your menstrual cycle, your down-there-ness – the whole SHE-bang.
If you missed yesterday's instalment, you can read it here + join me here at the blog tomorrow when I share why I believe The Pill and other synthetic hormones are making ladykind bat shit cray-cray.
